Allegheny Energy, Inc., through its subsidiaries, engages in the ownership and operation of electric generation facilities, as well as delivers electric services to customers in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia. It operates in two segments, Delivery and Services, and Generation and Marketing. The Delivery and Services segment conducts transmission and distribution business that serves approximately 378,600 customers in northern West Virginia; 475,000 customers in West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia; and 711,000 customers in southwestern, south-central, and northern Pennsylvania. This segment also develops fiber-optic projects, including fiber and data services; and unregulated energy-related projects. The Generation and Marketing segment owns, operates, and manages electric generation facilities. It generates electricity through various fuel sources, including coal, natural gas-fired, pumped-storage, hydro, and steam. As of December 31, 2007, this segment owned approximately 6,896; 2,806; and 1,059 megawatts of generation capacity. The company is headquartered in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.

For the nine months ended 30 September 2006, Allegheny Energy, Inc.'s revenues increased 3% to $2.38B. Net income from continuing operations totaled $256.9M, up from $71.8M.
