Canadian National Railway Company, together with its subsidiaries, engages in the rail and related transportation business in North America. It provides transportation for various goods, including petroleum and chemicals, grain and fertilizers, coal, metals and minerals, forest products, and intermodal and automotive products. As of December 31, 2009, the company operated a network of approximately 21,000 route miles of track spans Canada and mid-America, from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to the Gulf of Mexico. It serves ports of Vancouver, Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Montreal, Halifax, New Orleans, and Mobile in Alabama, as well as metropolitan areas of Toronto, Buffalo, Chicago, Detroit, Duluth, Minnesota/Superior, Wisconsin, Green Bay, Wisconsin, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Memphis, and Jackson in Mississippi, with connections to various points in North America. The company was founded in 1922 and is headquartered in Montreal, Canada.

For the nine months ended 30 September 2006, Canadian National Railway's revenues increased 8% to C$5.77B. Net income increased 41% to C$1.59B. Revenues reflect a rise in earnings from petroleum & chemicals, higher fuel surcharges and volume growth in the grain, intermodal, metals & minerals commodity groups. Net income also reflects improved operating margins, lower labor & fringe benefits expenses and favourable impact of the stronger Canadian dollar.
