The company was founded in 1917 under the name Missouri Public Service Company and changed its name to UtiliCorp United, Inc. in 1985. Further, it changed its name to Aquila, Inc. in 2002. Aquila, Inc. is headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri.

For the nine months ended 30 September 2006, Aquila, Inc.'s revenues rose 12% to $1.03B. Net loss from continuing operations totaled $291M, up from $116.8M. Revenues reflect higher sales from Electric Utilities segment due to rate increases & higher customer billings and increased Gas Utilities division income. Higher loss reflects higher operation & maintenance expenses, increased loss on sale of assets and increased interest expense.
