As of the above date, the company sold natural gas to approximately 822,000 residential, commercial, and industrial customers. The Construction Services segment engages in constructing and maintaining electric and communication lines, gas pipelines, fire protection systems, external lighting, and traffic signalization equipment. It also provides inside electrical wiring, cabling, mechanical services, as well as sells and distributes electrical materials, and manufactures and distributes specialty equipment. The Pipeline and Energy Services segment provides natural gas transportation, underground storage, and gathering services through pipeline systems in the Rocky Mountain and northern Great Plains regions. The Construction Materials and Contracting segment engages in the mining, processing, and sale of construction aggregates, including crushed stone, sand, and gravel; production and sale of asphalt mix, and the of supply liquid asphalt; and supply of ready-mixed concrete for construction activities. The Other segment insures various types of risks as a captive insurer through its subsidiary, Centennial Holdings Capital LLC. The company was founded in 1924 and is based in Bismarck, North Dakota.

For the nine months ended 30 September 2006, MDU Resources Group, Inc.'s revenues rose 22% to $2.98B. Net income from cont. ops. rose 16% to $235.9M.
