RailAmerica, Inc. primarily engages in the ownership and operation of short line and regional freight railroads in North America. Its short line freight railroads provide transportation services for both online customers and Class I railroads that interchange with its rail lines. As of December 31, 2005, the company owned, leased, and/or operated a portfolio of 43 railroads with approximately 8,000 miles of track located in the United States and Canada. These properties are located in the southeastern, southwestern, midwestern, the Great Lakes, New England, and Pacific Coast regions of the United States. The Canadian properties operate in four provinces. The company was founded in 1985 and is headquartered in Boca Raton, Florida.

For the nine months ended 30 September 2006, RailAmerica, Inc.'s revenues increased 13% to $348.5M. Net income from continuing operations decreased 11% to $19M. Revenues reflect increased sales due to higher rates, increased fuel surcharge and the improvement in the canadian dollar. Net income was offset by increased interest expenses, higher selling, general & administrative expenses and an increase in depreciation charges.
