The MaterialScience group offers plastics granules, sheets, and films; and polyurethanes for various applications, as well as coating and adhesive raw materials and inorganic basic chemicals. The company distributes its products through wholesalers, pharmacies, and hospitals, as well as directly to patients. It has operations in Europe, North America, Asia Pacific, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East. The company, formerly known as Farbenfabriken Bayer AG was founded in 1863 and is headquartered in Leverkusen, Germany.

For the nine months ended 30 September 2006, Bayer AG's revenues increased 14% to EUR21.97B. Net income from continuing operations decreased 11% to EUR1.29B. Revenues reflect an increase in income from Pharmaceuticals, Consumer Health and Material Science segment. Net income was offset by higher selling expenses, increased research & development expense, higher general & administrative expenses and decreased other operating income.
